One of GCE’s goals is to develop an awareness of what is Global Citizen. We are encouraging our students to think Global by enhancing each learning unit and creating a bridge between classroom and real-world learning. This Friday, we have the honor to visit the Japanese Information Center in Chicago.

These are students thoughts:

How did this experience today organize and activate ideas from your entire course work from this term?

Civic Engagement – Compromiso Cívico

¿Qué es el “Compromiso Cívico” - What is Civic Engagement?

This is a time for learning, a time to understand what it takes to be civically engaged, a time to present students the tools necessary to participate and engage themselves into the community.
First we research…
Then we visit…
Then we plan..
Then we participate, we engage…
These weeks we will be working on our unit with the collaboration of a great number of citizens from our community, Pilsen community and several organizations.

Connection is everything

Some facts we should know before and after watching this awesome movie (facts taken from visitor official site)

Number of immigrants: 1 million enter the U.S. annually. 35 million currently live here.

Top ten countries where people immigrate from (in order of population): Mexico, India, China, Philippines, Ireland, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Canada, Korea and Cuba

Where do they live? 70% of the total foreign-born population, as of 2000, live in California, New York, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Illinois. More recently, there has been a shift, with more and more immigrants settling in new gateway communities, including suburbs, the Midwest and the South.

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts, feelings and/or experience.

  • ¿Con qué personaje de la pel¡cula se sintio mas identificado? ¿Por qué? (Which of the characters in the film did you relate to most? Why?)
